As China further relaxes its COVID restrictions, many cities are striving to boost consumption to prop up economic growth. Huang Yichang has more from Wuhan.
Queuing up for snacks, going out for a Sunday stroll, the hustle and bustle is slowly coming back, but the economy still needs a push.
HUANG YICHANG Wuhan, Hubei "In a bid to stimulate consumption, cities across China have taken measures to boost consumer demand with consumption vouchers or spending subsidies. For example, in the city of Wuhan, the local government issued over 1,400,000 dollars' worth of coupons for electronic goods and furniture right after the announcement on optimizing COVID policies. Let's see how it works."
Ten a.m., as soon as the store opens, in groups of two and three, people rush in, to grab coupons.
The public is not yet fully prepared psychologically for loosening COVID measures, but this place is a hive of activity.
You can get a coupon worth 300 rmb and use it for purchases worth more than 3000 rmb. That means you can get a 300 rmb discount on your purchase.
For some people, the coupon is not motivation enough to buy anything.
WUHAN RESIDENT "I need to think about it; I will also have to look at the price or the quality."
But younger consumers seem much less rational.
WUHAN RESIDENT "I want to get hold of something here if possible."
Wuhan Resident "I will use the coupon for sure because it feels like earning 300 yuan."
Although the bargains didn't attract a huge crowd, the store manager is quite pleased with the situation.
LI MENG Store Manager Wuhan Gongmao Home Appliance "We sold about 100,000 dollars' worth of goods yesterday. It is almost the same as a weekend sale before the pandemic in 2019."
In addition to handing out coupons, various activities have also been organized to revitalize the market.
WU JING Deputy Director, Wuhan Commerce Department "We have been promoting various service consumption models in addition to traditional commodity consumption. For example, in the newly-opened shopping mall, MSD, we established the world's largest indoor ski area."
Although many emerging indoor activities haven't seen that many visitors in recent days, Wu says more measures are rolling out during the upcoming New Year holidays and Spring Festival, and he is confident that the consumer market will gradually recover.
With the loosening of COVID restrictions, experts believe China's economy will show strong momentum in the coming year. Huang Yichang, CGTN, Wuhan.
